The penultimate episode of The Voice was a lackluster snoozefest until about an hour and half in Monday night. At approximately 9:30pm EST, a ray of light emanated from television screens across America in the form of a Jamaican superstar named Tessanne Chin.
The Team Adam contestant, in her second solo performance of the night, tackled the late Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," a track from The Bodyguard soundtrack. Now, typically, I would say it's never a good idea to sing a Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson song on a reality singing competition show, but there are rare occasions when a contestant has the vocal chops to turn the track into their own and not a cheesy karaoke version of the original. Tessanne Chin did just that.
Chin's version of the song was pure perfection - a critical performance on the final night of competition before voting. She stayed true to the original version of the song, but was able to add in her own flair, calling to mind a seasoned performer many years into the game.
But was it enough for Chin to win the competition? If Twitter is any indication, she is certainly a contender, with her main competition being 16-year-old Jacquie Lee.
if Tessanne Chin doesn`t win the Voice, that would be a crime against humanity, and I don't even watch the show. #ihavenothing- Owen (@owenmcadams) December 17, 2013
